Among the many forms of “basic” dance, belly dancing is accessible to a wide variety of shapes, sizes and fitness levels. You do not always have to focus on choreography, so the mind is more free to take advantage of movements and express internal conflicts. In Europe, they call “therapy by the movement of primitive dance”. They use it to cure psychological ailments and help the learning of disabled children.
It is not a friendly working environment and far from the peak of belly dancing, when the Egyptian king Farouk came out with a dancing star and Madame Badia’s cabaret with German spies and British officers on leave during the Second World War. But now, with little perspective of the Muslim Brotherhood rule of sit’t, belly dancers are hoping for a return to better days. Ms. Raqia, on the other hand, is bubbling with optimism and has even changed her music to reflect the changing circumstances.
Thank you for your insight! As a Middle Eastern dancer of Lebanese heritage who started a professional career in the late 1970s, I appreciate your perspective and your faith that our sensitivity to a long-held culture Are more in tune with the orientalist implications. Shukran! This is an article that provokes reflection. I was thinking recently of a group on the cultural appropriation inherent in non-Middle Eastern belly dancing - and will continue to reflect.

The last time I forgot, a white woman came out in Arabic – because that’s what it is, when someone who is not Arab wears genie pants and a bra, eye makeup and Arabic jewelry. a piece of jewelery that claims to be “Arab” because it is metallic and shiny and has scribbles – and has begun to dance the belly. She was not a terrible belly dancer. But she was incredibly thin and did not remind me of Tahia Karioca or Hind Rostom or my favorite Raqs Sharqi dancer, Fifi Abdo. Abdo used to dance in the bra and skirt expected, but later danced especially in dresses that were somewhat shapeless and more traditional – a sort of housewear-streetwear disaffected dress that people in Egypt rock every day.
Super article! I’m really grateful, I was looking to read this, thanks a lot! Also, I want to know your opinion about “students” they are students, but they are self-professed as professionals who teach without being ready? Whenever I see some of them, I always think They are not aware of their irresponsibility? Thanks again Thanks for your comment! I mean, we are all students, are not we? But there are some students who REALLY really REALLY perform before being professionally before they have the label, the knowledge, and the training to do it.
I have never been a passionate of the Middle East. My dance background comes from modern dance, a dance style that I do not like anymore. I came to belly dancing because of the criticism I received from other modern dancers about how it was inappropriate to smile playing or participating in costumes. My modern dance style was rather aesthetic. My own personal style would now be called a fusion of the two art forms.
