This book examines the globalization of belly dancing and the different communities dancers who have evolved. The story of belly dancing took place in the global flow of travelers, immigrants, entrepreneurs and tourists from the 19th to the 21st century. In some cases, dance is transferred to new communities in the normative gender structure of its original location in North Africa and the Middle East.
Some reject all the labels. Despite their differences, many names came together in 2006 to play on Gothic Bellydance Revelations, a dance DVD created by World Dance New York. In 2011, they published an 85-minute show with a grandiose synopsis "A multitude of poetic visions from the Gothic subculture". To document the movement, Tempest, a Seattle-based belly dancer, founded the Gothic Belly Dance Resource Website in 2003.
It is not a friendly working environment and far from the peak of belly dancing, when the Egyptian king Farouk came out with a dancing star and Madame Badia's cabaret with German spies and British officers on leave during the Second World War. But now, with little perspective of the Muslim Brotherhood rule of sit't, belly dancers are hoping for a return to better days. Ms. Raqia, on the other hand, is bubbling with optimism and has even changed her music to reflect the changing circumstances.
