No! When you belly dance, you hold your arms at an angle of ninety degrees to maintain your balance and infuse movements with grace. By placing your hands on your hips, you will get rid of your balance and even teach your hips the wrong movements. Guess again! Yes! Mentally dividing your torso can help you master this movement mentally. Imagine that your hips are totally separated from each other, and that those that move do not affect the other at all.
These types of performances are absolutely necessary for any form of dance. Maybe the job opportunities in East Bay are in decline, but that's not the case in North Bay. We have several monthly performance series in progress. I myself have created a quarterly series for 2016. We have several major performance events. Although the gathering of committed students is still a challenge, and perhaps even more so than in 2000, there are many wonderful local teachers, many of whom run their own dance companies.

I have never been a passionate of the Middle East. My dance background comes from modern dance, a dance style that I do not like anymore. I came to belly dancing because of the criticism I received from other modern dancers about how it was inappropriate to smile playing or participating in costumes. My modern dance style was rather aesthetic. My own personal style would now be called a fusion of the two art forms.
