I have never been a passionate of the Middle East. My dance background comes from modern dance, a dance style that I do not like anymore. I came to belly dancing because of the criticism I received from other modern dancers about how it was inappropriate to smile playing or participating in costumes. My modern dance style was rather aesthetic. My own personal style would now be called a fusion of the two art forms.
I would probably recommend Galata. It is designed specifically for tourists, but it may not be a bad thing. At the risk of creating a great controversy, I will ask this question about dance. When we lived in Turkey many years ago, I saw exceptionally talented women who could muscular muscles on their stomachs. It was incredible. We went to Al Jamal hoping to see this type of talent. Unfortunately, we have just seen what we see everywhere now called belly dance.
